Metaplex Studios

Creator Studio: No-code tools for minting, managing, and distributing NFTs on Solana

I joined Metaplex as Lead Product Designer to shape the Creator Studio: a suite of self-serve tools built for artists, developers, and founders to manage their on-chain assets. I led design from whiteboard flows through implementation, working closely with engineering to ensure that technical complexity translated into clear, trustworthy experiences.

Lead Product Designer

Scope

Creator Economy · NFT Tooling

Category

UX & UI · Product Design

Industry

Blockchain Services · NFTs

Responsibilities

  • Product definition & UX flows

  • UI design across responsive surfaces

  • Design systems & component logic

  • Partnering with engineers on blockchain-specific constraints

Framing the Problem

Metaplex Studio needed to serve a fragmented audience:

  • Creators wanted powerful tools with minimal friction.

  • Developers needed access to advanced settings and programmatic control.

  • Collectors expected intuitive UIs and predictable behavior across NFTs.

My design goal was to unify these experiences through a shared visual language, progressive disclosure, and cross-surface consistency.

Design Highlights

Candy Machine Creation

Launch NFT drops with clarity and control.

Candy Machine is Metaplex’s protocol for minting and distributing NFTs on Solana. The redesigned creation flow balances power and accessibility, guiding users through each step while offering granular configuration. Core Editions, Random Mints, Edition Packs, Edition Drops, Hybrid Drops, and Airdrops.

  • Step-by-step builder: Upload assets, define supply, pricing, mint schedule, and gating rules.

  • Advanced settings: Configure mutability, collection association, freeze authority, and more.

  • Pre-launch checks: Built-in validation and confirmations to prevent critical misconfigurations.

  • Multi-phase support: Gate by wallet, token ownership, or allowlists with scheduled phases.

Airdrops

Send NFTs directly to wallets without requiring minting

Airdrops extend the Candy Machine infrastructure to allow direct NFT delivery. They are ideal for rewards, giveaways, or retroactive grants. It streamlines the process by skipping minting UX entirely.

  • Built on Candy Machine: Reuses the creation flow for asset setup.

  • Bulk address import: Add wallet addresses manually or via CSV upload.

  • No interaction required: NFTs are automatically delivered to recipients.

  • Scales easily: Supports airdropping to thousands of wallets in one batch.

Collection Migration & Rule Set Management

Control which programs can interact with your NFTs.

  • Custom rule creation: Choose between allow-lists and deny-lists by program ID.

  • Import existing sets: Load rule sets by public key with preview and versioning safeguards.

  • Edit and reuse: Modify sets in-place, duplicate, or assign across multiple collections.

  • Clear validation: Errors and duplicates surfaced before confirmation.

To support royalty enforcement and secure interactions, Metaplex introduced Rule Sets which allow creators to define access policies for collections. These flows let users create, import, and manage those configurations.

Collaboration Impact & Learnings

Engineering

Ensuring that trading interactions and edge cases matched on-chain realities.

Product

Defined phased rollouts, defaults, and prioritization based on user risk profiles.

Community

Audited creator pain points, surfaced language mismatches, and validated prototypes with beta users.

Key things I focused on:

  • Simplifying workflows while honoring protocol constraints

  • Reusing visual and interaction patterns to reduce learning curves

  • Designing for edge cases like zero-asset states, malformed NFTs, or failed mints.
